I am the wife of a very talented musician who takes me around the world in pursuit of excellence. Mama to Jakob, Audrey and Ella, who just happens to have Down Syndrome.
And an aspiring disciple of Jesus, defender of the oppressed, writer, graphic designer and photographer.
I write and speak on navigating through the fog of life…you know, when things don’t go exactly as planned and am fuelled by a passion to amplify the voices of those on the margins…
oh, and coffee…lots of coffee.
Sometimes, life is like that statement necklace, or pair of python stilettos, or that dress that guarantees you will stick out like a sore thumb. You just have to own it and then rock it. So often lately, I have felt like my life has slipped into a mundane pair of gap jeans – ill-fitting, slightly faded and just like every other pair you see on the street and quite frankly, that is not how I like to roll.
Last night I went to a wedding and after MUCH deliberation, (that might be an understatement), I settled on my “I feel sexy” go-to dress. I didn’t even dress it down by toning down the make up or wearing my hair down because after all, how many chances do you have to wear a dress like that – in my world, not many.
I long to pull that dress out and wear it more often, or better yet, have more like it, but we can’t spend every year wandering the streets of Cambridge or weekending in Paris. This however, doesn’t mean that our life is any less sexy. It’s just different and its what you make it. As I walked my dog around suburbia tonight, I couldn’t help but think maybe it’s not my circumstances or my postal code, but my attitude.
Maybe I just need to take what I get, own it and then rock it.
